Features of the breed
Silkies are named for their unusual feathers. Lacking the barbs that hold the edges of the feathers together, the feathers are loose and so resemble silky fur instead. This breed has a tufted head, a pea comb, and feathered legs with five toes on their feet. Also, aside from turquoise earlobes, they have completely black skin and meat. They are notoriously good broodies and are generally a docile bird.

Our Gold Silkies
As our young daughter was interested, we bought hatching eggs from an Irish breeder in 2013. The hatch resulted in just one hen and 2 cockerels. We have kept a couple of their pullet offspring. The silkies live most of the year ranging in the yard with the laying flock, except when the hens go broody. They are superb broodies.
